Sorry for jumping into this thread so late, but I wanted to mention an
approach that I've used in the past to good effect:  Turn on file-based
caching COMPILE_DIR and combine it with a cron job that purges the cache
directory periodically.  Then all the cache control can be contained in
that cron job.
